Frequently Asked Questions

What is Maya used for?

Autodesk Maya is professional 3D software used for 3D modelling, animation, rigging, visual effects and rendering. It is the industry standard for character animation and is widely used in film, TV, games and motion design.

Is Maya suitable for complete beginners?

Yes. Our Maya training includes options for complete beginners as well as intermediate and advanced users. Beginners start with the interface, navigation and core modelling tools before progressing to texturing, rigging, character animation and rendering with Arnold.

Do I need previous 3D experience?

No previous 3D experience is required for beginner-level training. If you already have experience with Maya or another 3D package, your training can focus on the areas you want to improve rather than starting from the beginning. LDTC training is personalised and project-focused.

What will I learn on a Maya course?

Depending on the course you choose, you can learn 3D modelling, UVs and texturing, materials, lighting, cameras, rigging, character animation and rendering. LDTC also offers specialist courses such as V-Ray for Maya and Maya evening training.

Should I learn Maya or 3ds Max?

Maya is the industry standard for character animation, film and visual effects, while 3ds Max is popular for architectural visualisation and games. If you're not sure which is right for you, we can advise you based on your goals and the work you want to produce.

Can I learn Maya on a Mac?

Yes. Maya runs on both Windows and macOS. For in-person training, suitable computers are provided at the training centre. For live online training, you will be able to access control to our screen and use the software at the same time as us.
